Home / About Us: Overview

The Society of Eye Care Professionals was formed in 2006 as an alternate voice for Opticians in Ontario. Secondary to that role, the Society will strive to foster harmony between the various members of the ophthalmic community including Opticianry, Optometry and Ophthalmology. Through collaboration of all our partners in the ophthalmic community, we can tackle common issues such as illegal refracting, illegal dispensing and the proliferation of internet contact lens sales more effectively.

With our large membership base, the Society has been able to obtain special discounted Professional Liability Insurance rates for all of our members.

MISSION STATEMENT

Advocating on behalf of Eye Care professionals to ensure a regulated environment where both the public is protected and the profession prospers.

OUR PURPOSE

Our primary role is to provide an alternate voice for Opticians in Ontario.

CORE PRINCIPLES
  1. A well regulated profession serves a dual purpose. The public interest is preserved since controlled acts such as dispensing of eyeglasses and contact lenses remain with trained registered professionals. Secondly, a regulated environment ensures that all legitimate businesses adhere to the same rules and regulations thereby maintaining a fair and level playing field.
  2. An informed and engaged membership will ensure that governance of the industry remains transparent, accountable and effective.
OUR GOALS
  1. Preservation of our scope of practice. Dispensing of Eyeglasses and Contact lenses is the lifeblood of our industry and the heart of our profession. Our goal is to keep the controlled act of dispensing in the hands of licenced opticians.
  2. The Society is dedicated to preserving and promoting the highest standards of education and standards of practice. Maintaining high standards of education and enforcing our regulations is the key to the survival of our profession and safeguarding the public.
